Hamming it up at an authentic Spanish jamón bodega in London

Bar Tozino

Carving up jamón from a full pig’s leg and serving it to customers with a flourish is normally an art form reserved only for tapas bars and cafes in Spain.

But one bar in South East London’s Maltby Street Market is bringing the most Spanish of traditions to British customers.

Tozino dedicates itself to ham and the art of carving it, serving up artisan Jamón de Teruel from Aragon and the speciality acorn-fed Jamón Iberico from Los Pedroches in Cordoba. The meat also decorates the bar, with huge legs hanging from the ceiling.

Customers can wash down a jamón and Manchego cheese tapas dish, or a jamón sandwich with a selection of Rioja wines or sherries. And for those who would like to practise the art of carving themselves, there are also workshops and ham on the bone is for sale. Although freshly carved jamón is also on sale to take home.
