INTERNATIONAL SHERRY WEEK CAUSES STIR FOR FIFTH YEAR RUNNING

This week, from 8-14 October, the fifth edition of the International Sherry Week is taking place with individual contributors hosting an array of celebrations across the globe. Organised under the patronage of El Consejo Regulador Jerez-Xeres-Sherry, International Sherry Week is an opportunity for aficianados of the Spanish wine to get together in restaurants, bars, wine stores and bodegas across more than 30 countries to enjoy sherry tastings, pairing menus and other sherry-themed events.

It is a lesser-known fact that the term ‘sherry’ comes from the anglicised word for ‘Xeres’ (Jerez), which is where almost all sherry wines are exclusively produced. In fact, a law was passed in Europe granting sherry ‘protected designation of origin status’, meaning that all wine labelled as ‘sherry’ must come from the Sherry Triangle, an area in Andalucía between Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and El Puerto de Santa María. The wine itself is produced in a variety of styles made primarily from the Palomino grape, ranging from light versions to darker, heavier versions.

International Sherry Week has reported huge successes in the previous editions with organisers reporting increases of as much 500% in sherry wine sales during the week, along with sustained growth as a result of exposure. According to the organisers, in 2017, more than 15,000 original posts were recorded throughout the seven days with the hashtag #sherryweek. This year there is much opportunity for engagement by registering your own sherry-themed event or social posts, which will then be shared on the website with other sherry lovers across the world. The campaign has been well received having been awarded two recognitions from the Drinks International Wine Marketing Awards and the Drinks Business.

Ultimately, this week is an excellent opportunity for wine lovers across the world to come together and celebrate one of Spain’s many exquisite products.
