MENORCA AWARDED THE TITLE OF EUROPEAN REGION OF GASTRONOMY 2022

On 18 January 2020, the Balearic Island of Menorca was officially awarded the title of European Region of Gastronomy for 2022 by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT). The European Region of Gastronomy project aims to promote local products and cuisine in accordance with the principles of sustainable development and has recognised Menorca’s efforts to enrich and support its own gastronomic heritage and cultural diversity. The IGCAT was impressed by the role that gastronomy has as a cornerstone of the island’s economy and culture.

The Balearic Islands have long been recognised for their ever-evolving gastronomy which takes influences from a variety of cultures that have settled on the Mediterranean archipelago during its long history. The low-key island of Menorca is home to a host of denominación de origen (designation of origin) products such as Mahón-Menorca cheese, cured meats, hand-made liquors, pastries and wines. The island’s gastronomic identity has been crafted over time by local businesses, small farms and artisans who have supported the local economy and upheld tradition, while offering visitors innovative and immerse gastro-experiences.

Committed to preserving these products and respecting both traditional and modern culinary traditions, the island has initiated a range of measures to preserve and benefit the destination’s unique gastronomic ecosystem. This includes ‘Fira Arrels’ an annual event that showcases the island’s distinct gastronomy, bringing Menorcan cuisine to the world and providing a platform to showcase both traditional and new food businesses, supporting producers and restaurants while boosting awareness, and in turn, consumption of local produce.

In 2022, Menorca will host an array of gastronomic events and festivals in celebration of its recognition as the European Region of Gastronomy and hopes to further consolidate its position as a leading food destination worldwide.
