THE SPANISH SAILGP TEAM TO FLY THE ICONIC IMAGE OF SPANISH TOURISM

A ground-breaking partnership agreement has been struck between the Spanish SailGP Team and TURESPAÑA (the national tourism agency responsible for marketing Spain’s destination worldwide and creating value for its tourism sector) in which the emblematic ‘Sun of Miró’ will be showcased on the Spanish F50 racing catamaran.

‘The Sun of Miró’ was created by legendary Catalan artist Joan Miró and, over the last 36 years, has become an emblem of Spanish tourism after being gifted to the Spanish Government by the artist himself. In doing so, the ‘Sun of Miró’ became the first abstract symbol used to identify a country and is widely regarded today as one of the most iconic of its kind and for being synonymous to Spain and its tourism.

From this year onwards, the ‘Sun of Miró’ will also be the emblem that the Spanish F50 catamaran will sail with in SailGP competitions. SailGP is the world’s fasted racing in class sailing and sees top athletes from six nations (Australia, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan and United States) compete in some of the world’s most iconic harbours.

Through this partnership, TURESPAÑA is delighted to turn to sport to project and promote brand awareness of Spain abroad, in a championship that will be broadcasted by multiple TV stations around the world, and that in 2020 will visit five of the most iconic Pacific and Atlantic coastal cities.

The Spanish boat will not only brandish the ‘Sun of Miró’ but has also been named the “F50 Victoria” in memory of the Nao Victoria, the Spanish ship that completed the first circumnavigation of the world under the captaincy of Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastian Elcano. The Spanish SailGP team will also use the official logo of the V Centenary of the circumnavigation to recognise its achievement as one of the most significant maritime deeds in history.

For Isabel Oliver, Secretary of State for Tourism and President of TURESPAÑA, “the Spanish SailGP team represents the best values in sport and in sailing which is a 100% sustainable discipline. This is a project that combines talent, technology, sport, culture and tourism. Therefore, from TURESPAÑA we are not only transferring our corporate image to the Spanish vessel, but also maximising synergies with the entire team while strategically promoting the best image of Spain to important markets across the globe. In addition, it is a great opportunity to commemorate the great maritime adventure that Spain led 500 years ago”.
