TOP FAMILY HOLIDAYS TO SPAIN

With the school holidays fast approaching, it’s time to book a summer vacation the whole family will love. Go beyond the well-trodden Costas and there's no denying Spain is one of the most diverse, picturesque and lively destinations in the world.

  1. Cabo de Gata, Almería

Spain’s coastal destinations have many hidden gems that even frequent visitors to Spain’s Costas might not have yet discovered.

Cabo de Gata Natural Park, Andalucía’s largest protected coastal area, is an unspoilt stretch of coastline offering a wild landscape with spectacular geological features and volcanic rock formations. It is the ideal destination for families looking for a more natural and authentic Spanish beach experience or for children who like a bit of adventure mixed with honing their sandcastle building skills.

Cabo de Gata is a destination that will be a winner for all the family. It has secluded coves, dunes, desert landscapes, wild cliffs, pretty villages, water sports, Spain’s Wild West theme parks and gold mine tours at Rodalquilar.

  1. Medieval Spain: Costa Brava

For those wanting to combine beach with a little bit of history (or Instagram bragging), head to the Catalonian province of Girona. Here you can explore the Costa Brava’s charming and picturesque medieval towns. Only a few kilometres inland, Pals, Palamós and Peratallada are picture-postcard towns made up of quaint cobbled streets wtih well preserved Roman, Gothic and Baroque architectural features. Charming shops and galleries, authentic restaurants and pleasant terraces provide respite from the beach.

The Costa Brava is rated one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe and offers endless fun for all the family. Parc Aventura will keep little adventurers happy with zipwires, canyoning, caving and climbing; the Dali Theatre Museum in Figueres adds some culture and colour to your family holiday; coastal walking trails or catamaran cruises will reveal the beauty of the rugged Costa Brava coastline; Water Parks will keep the kids entertained (and cool!); Segway tours provide an innovative way to explore the destination… The list is endless!

  1. Green Spain: Asturias, Basque Country, Cantabria and Galicia

The northern strip of Spain along the Atlantic coast is known as Green Spain and is truly one of the most scenic destinations in Europe. The name speaks for itself: Green Spain offers a temperate climate, lush landscapes, mountains, gorges and stunning river valleys.

Green Spain is made up of four regions: Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and The Basque Country. It is different to any other part of Spain. With climates similar to the UK, temperatures are cooler, making it the ideal destination for families wanting to escape the scorching summer heat typical of other European destinations.

Northern Spain is much less crowded than the more well-trodden Mediterranean Costas. As well as a stunning unspoilt natural coastline of beaches and cliffs, it offers a wealth of activities and adventure for a fun-packed family holiday. Visit high glacial lakes, enjoy walking trails and wildlife, cycle through beautiful green valleys, admire breath-taking views from the dizzy heights of a cable car, kayak down rivers, savour the freshest seafood in picturesque fishing villages... There’s no lack of history either – in the form of impressive churches and monasteries, cave paintings and even prehistoric remains!

Many believe that the gastronomy of the north is the most superior in Spain. Shellfish and seafood as well as meats, desserts and wines: the choice is immense and the produce of the highest quality. More on that here.
