Delivered through a collaboration between the Department of Territorial Cohesion and the Department of Culture, Sport, and Tourism, the project provides a dedicated cycling corridor across the Sakana region, encouraging cycling as a practical, low-carbon mode of transport while improving connections between local communities.

The new infrastructure comprises a 46-kilometre main route and 12 connecting branches with a combined length of 21 kilometres, creating an integrated network that links towns and villages throughout the valley. The project included the construction of new cycling paths alongside the upgrade of existing routes, with improvements to road surfaces, drainage systems and signage to enhance safety, accessibility and user experience.

The investment is designed to support everyday travel as well as recreational cycling, providing residents with an attractive alternative to private car use while promoting healthier and more sustainable lifestyles. The improved infrastructure is also expected to strengthen the region's appeal for cycle tourism, delivering wider economic benefits to local businesses and communities year-round.

The Irurtzun–Ziordia route forms part of Navarre's wider strategic cycling network, which aims to connect the principal towns of the Chartered Community of Navarre with neighbouring autonomous communities and France. By strengthening regional and cross-border connectivity, the project contributes to the Government of Navarre's long-term objectives of reducing transport emissions, improving territorial cohesion and expanding active travel infrastructure.

The completion of the new cycling route reinforces Navarre's ongoing investment in sustainable mobility, demonstrating how targeted infrastructure projects can improve accessibility, support local economic development and encourage a shift towards greener, more resilient transport systems.
