Barcelona at the Heart of Gaudí 2026

Barcelona and wider Catalonia will act as the epicentre of the celebrations, hosting a wide-ranging programme across more than 75 venues, including museums, public spaces, and cultural institutions. At the centre is the Sagrada Família, Gaudí’s most ambitious project, where a milestone will take place on 10 June 2026, the anniversary of his death, with the inauguration of the Tower of Jesus Christ. Rising to 172.5 metres, it will mark a symbolic moment in the basilica’s long construction.

Across the city, Gaudí’s most celebrated works, including Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, and Park Güell, will host exhibitions, performances, and installations. Highlights include immersive digital art experiences and façade projections at Casa Batlló, a symphonic premiere at the Palau de la Música Catalana, and community-led celebrations at Park Güell, which will also mark the centenary of its opening as a public park.

Beyond Barcelona, the "Gaudí Way”

The centenary will offer visitors the opportunity to explore the architect’s early influences in Reus and nearby Riudoms, where his connection to nature and craftsmanship helped shape his distinctive architectural style. His legacy extends beyond Catalonia through a unique cultural route linking the only three buildings he designed outside the region. Known as the “Gaudí Way”, it connects destinations across northern Spain and offers a broader perspective on his work.

In Comillas, El Capricho is one of his earliest creations which stands out for its vibrant ceramic decoration featuring sunflower motifs and nature-inspired details. In León, Casa Botines blends Gothic and modernist influences and today hosts exhibitions dedicated to Gaudí and Spanish art, whereas nearby Astorga is home to the Episcopal Palace, an imposing neo-Gothic building often likened to a medieval castle. Throughout 2026, these sites will host guided tours, exhibitions, and cultural events as part of the centenary programme.

On the island of Mallorca, Gaudí’s influence can be seen in the restoration of Palma Cathedral, La Seu. His early 20th-century intervention transformed the interior by enhancing natural light, reconfiguring the space, and introducing distinctive decorative elements. A dedicated exhibition will explore his contribution to the cathedral during the centenary year.

A Nationwide Celebration

Officially recognised as an event of exceptional public interest, Gaudí 2026 brings together institutions across Spain to celebrate the architect’s enduring legacy. From Barcelona’s iconic skyline to coastal towns and historic cities, the programme highlights both the scale and diversity of his legacy.

100 years after Joaquín Sorolla's greatest works were first inaugurated at the Hispanic Society in New York, the museum has unveiled a major new partnership with the Generalitat Valenciana to create the institution’s first international outpost in Valencia. 

Located in the Palacio de las Comunicaciones in the city center, The Hispanic Society of America – Colección Sorolla will present more than 220 works on loan from the Society’s exceptional holdings of art by Valencian master Sorolla. Spanning oil paintings, gouaches, drawings, photographs, sculpture, and personal letters, the museum will provide visitors with the rare chance to experience Sorolla’s work in the city where he was born and raised. Alongside the exhibition, a programme of interrelated activities, lectures and cultural events will be organised to promote and inform art enthusiasts of his work.  

Beyond deepening cultural connections between Valencia and the Hispanic Society, the initiative underscores the pivotal role of the Society’s founder, Archer M. Huntington, in supporting and promoting Sorolla’s career. While renovations continue on the Hispanic Society’s historic New York campus to expand gallery space, the institution is pleased to share these works with new audiences in a place of profound significance to the artist. The museum is expected to open in 2026, with further announcements to come as the project moves forward.

World-renowned for its impressive architecture and unique ties to creative genius Antoni Gaudí, the Barcelona City Council will coordinate a programme which brings architecture and urbanism closer to its locals and visitors, with a pedagogical approach that demonstrates their positive influence. Offering exhibitions, itineraries, workshops, open houses, visits, installations, and conferences, collectively the city council’s efforts seek to leave a legacy for the city.

Some of the key events due to take place include:

-   At the Museum of Ethnography and World Cultures there will be an exhibition dedicated to Nicolau Maria Rubió i Tudurí, the architect and landscape designer who played a key role in shaping modern Barcelona.

-   The MNAC will host an exhibition dedicated to modernist architect Josep Maria Jujol, a frequent collaborator of Antoni Gaudí.

-     The Picasso Museum will host an exhibition which explores Pablo Picasso’s deep relationship between art and architecture.

In anticipation of the Sagrada Familia’s official completion and the centenary of Gaudí's passing, 2026 is certainly set to be a significant year for Barcelona, its architectural heritage and citizens.

From the magical Night of San Juan to British artist Julian Opie’s brand-new art street exhibition, Palma is the place to be this summer.

ST JOHN’S NIGHT: AN ANCIENT CELEBRATION OF RENEWAL (23 June)

The enchanting annual celebration of La Noche de San Juan (Saint John’s Night) takes place on the evening of the summer solstice on 23 June, with bonfires marking the transition from spring to summer. This mystical tradition is said to bring good luck to those who leap over the fire and make a wish. Throughout the island and across Playa de Palma’s beaches, visitors can mark the shortest night of the year by taking part in the music and dancing, watching the fireworks and walking through the torchlit beaches.

A popular area to visit during the day is Palma’s Parc de la Mar, the park located at the foot of the medieval walls, in front of the iconic La Seu Cathedral. Various activities here, such as drumming courses, folk dances and cooking displays attracting thousands of people each year. The night officially begins at 11pm with the “correfoc” (fire-run) when local Mallorcans traditionally dress up as devils and run through the streets with torches. This is said to scare away evil spirits and bring good luck. At midnight, participants often mark the end of the rituals by bathing in the moonlight on the nearby beaches of Playa de Palma.

NEW JULIAN OPIE EXHIBITION IN PALMA (26 April – 31 August)

Julian Opie, a London-born visual artist renowned for his innovative approach to art, has always pushed the boundaries of traditional techniques to reimagine the everyday. Widely known for his Shaida Walking animated sculpture permanently installed on London’s Carnaby Street, Opie will now bring a captivating exhibition to the streets of Palma from 26 April-31 August 2024 in collaboration with the Palma City Council and Balearic Islands’ Government.

Opie’s art, consisting of a curated selection of 18 sculptures, installations and film screens, will be displayed across various spaces in the city. With this special Palma exhibition, Opie invites visitors to explore the intersection of art, architecture, and urban life, enriching their understanding of the world around them.

Participating venues include La Lonja guildhall, the Casal Solleric exhibition space, and throughout the beautiful gothic neighbourhood of Palma, as well as along the iconic streets of Passeig Sagrera and Passeig des Born.

La Lonja will welcome 12 works the complement the geometric intricacies of the old guildhall’s interiors, exploring themes of movement, human expression, and architectural symbolism. Outside, two towering steel sculptures will command attention in the square. Meanwhile along the bustling streets of Passeig Sagrera and Passeig del Born, Opie's LED-animated sculptures will dance to the rhythm of pedestrians, adding a dynamic element to the city streets. Visitors to Casal Solleric will find a large-scale installation and an LCD animation visible from the street, creating an immersive experience that extends beyond traditional gallery settings.

2024 marks the hundredth anniversary since the birth of Eduardo Chillida, the renowned Basque sculptor known for his monumental abstract works. Born in San Sebastián in 1924, Chillida is one of the most influential Spanish artists of the 20th century, known for poetic works such as Wind Comb. During his career he won countless prestigious awards, including the Venice Biennale, the Kandinsky and the Prince of Asturias awards.

Chillida’s works are spread throughout the Basque country and beyond, and can be found in public spaces and museums. To commemorate the 100^th anniversary of the artists’ death, venues and museums across Spain are holding special exhibitions featuring his work.

On the 23^rd September 2023, the Balearic capital of Palma will once again be transformed into an open-air art museum for the annual Nit de l’Art (Art Night). This year will see a host of impressive new exhibitions inaugurated in Casal Solleric - an 18^th century Baroque building housing contemporary art and photography - and Can Balaguer – one of the city’s most beautiful traditional courtyards.

This annual event sees the art galleries and museums in Palma’s historic centre stay open all night, as well as work from local artists displayed in cafes, bars and balconies, transforming the city into an open-air exhibition. To celebrate the start of the art and culture season, each gallery in the city has its own programme of activities in the days leading up to the main evening, when visitors are offered free entry.

On the 23^rd September, exhibition openings will include a collective exhibition at The Fermay Gallery, displaying works by Nadia Barkate, Alex Hudson and Nadia Naveau; The Baró gallery, showcasing Susy Gómez’s work, and the Aba Art Lab, portraying works by Teresa Matas.

In addition, award-winning visual artist Maria “La Ribot” Ribot will be performing a dance in Can Balaguer on the 20^th September, whilst at Casal Solleric, renowned artist Patrick Hamilton will be opening his new exhibition named ‘The Forgotten’ on the 21^st September and Portuguese artist Sandra Baia will present her sculptures and installations on the same day.

This Art Night, four galleries will host exhibitions for the very first time: LA BIBI; Galería Fermay; M77 Gallery; and PGallery. In the weeks following the main event, free guided tours will also be provided in Spanish, Catalan and English in the participating galleries.

The Biblioteca Gabriel García Márquez in Barcelona, which opened last year, was recently awarded the title of Public Library of the Year 2023 at the IFLA World Library and Information Conference in Rotterdam, surpassing 15 other libraries to claim the prestigious award. 

With its extraordinary timber-framed architecture (the building was designed to resemble a stack of open books), the library is a fine example of social responsibility, and is truly a place where the community comes first: serving around 240,000 residents, the Biblioteca Gabriel García Márquez offers not only a space to discover the world through reading but also provides community activities such as language, cooking and digital literacy workshops. The library was created with sustainability and inclusivity at its core – embodying how a building can enhance and interact with its local environment and culture – and includes distinct areas that cater to specific requirements, such as a sensory space for children with additional needs opening later this year. 

Since 2015, Barcelona has been designated a UNESCO City of Literature and the Catalan city is suffused with culture and literature at every turn. Countless artists, writers, photographers and musicians have been inspired by Barcelona’s inviting streets and vibrant buzz, and as visitors wander past Gaudiesque architecture and gaze at Barcelona’s stunning sandy beaches, it is not hard to imagine why. Dozens of writers and creatives have made the city their temporary or permanent home, including George Orwell, Maria Vargas Llosa and Gabriel García Márquez (the library’s namesake), and the city itself has been featured in a number of great novels and books, including Colm Toíbín’s majestic Homage to Barcelona and Juan Goytisolo’s Marks of Identity.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia will inaugurate the gallery at the opening ceremony on June 28th. 

Madrid boasts several world-renowned galleries, such as the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza, and the Reina Sofía. However, next month, Spain is poised to unveil one of Europe's most anticipated cultural highlights of the year: The Royal Collections Gallery in Madrid.

The new museum will showcase a remarkable assortment of paintings, tapestries, sculptures, decorative art pieces,  and royal furniture accumulated by Spanish monarchs over a span of five centuries, over the Hapsburg and Bourbon dynasties of the empire. Spain's Royal Collections are not the property of the crown but rather belong to the public, owing to a historical turn of events nearly a century ago. Presently, Patrimonio Nacional oversees palaces, monasteries, convents, and royal gardens across the country.

The exhibition will present 650 selected pieces out of the vast collection of over 150,000 artworks managed by Patrimonio Nacional. These works include contributions from artists including Velázquez, Goya, Caravaggio, Titian, and Tintoretto. Furthermore, the exhibition will feature a selection of the finest tapestries in the world, along with ancient carriages and royal furniture. Each year, approximately one-third of the exhibited works will be replaced with new exhibitions.

There will be eight exhibitions held in Madrid, three in Malaga, three in Barcelona, one in A Coruña and one in Bilbao. These exhibitions will highlight the artistic trajectory of Picasso throughout Spain and how his works were inspired by each region.  

MALAGA

Picasso was born in Malaga and spent the first ten years of his life living in the city. Although he never returned after the Civil War, the city made a lasting impression on the artist, and frequently featured in the pieces he made throughout his lifetime.

A CORUÑA

Picasso went on to spend four of his formative years in the Galician city of A Coruña moving there when he was nine years old. It was here that he attended the Fine Arts school and gave his first exhibition. There were a number of pivotal moments that the artist experienced in A Coruña, such as the death of his sister, that are said to have influenced his style and artwork.

BARCELONA

At the age of 13, Picasso went on to attend the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona where his father taught. The architecture of the city, such as Gaudi’s naturalism and modernism, is said to have greatly inspired him. It provided him with the opportunity to live alongside brilliant artists that left their mark on his art: Ramón Casas, Santiago Rusiñol and Carles Casagemas.

BILBAO

Bilbao, one of the main Spanish cities with close ties to the art world, will be celebrating the Picasso Year with an exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum.

The Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia has permanent exhibitions of his work such as "Grupa valenciana" and "Figuras de casacas jugando en un jardín". In addition to these, an immersive display entitled "Sorolla a través de la luz" that will showcase some of his rarely exhibited pieces.

There will also be guided tours of Valencia City to visit the sites associated with the painter, including his birthplace, next to the church of Santa Catalina where he was baptized; the Centro del Carmen, the School of Fine Arts where he studied; the Bancaja Cultural Centre, where there will be temporary exhibitions dedicated to the artist; and Malvarrosa beach, which inspired some of his most famous scenes. 

The Vertical restaurant will also be offering a menu inspired by Soralla’s work.

Cáceres, in Extremadura, has inherited Dubrovnik’s title of representing the capital of Westeros, Kings’ Landing.  The picturesque renaissance town is a UNESCO world-heritage site and represents a slightly newer, shinier King’s Landing that is set centuries before the events of the main show.

Extremadura’s Trujillo Castle will once again feature in the HBO series after appearing in Game of Thrones as Casterly Rock, the home of the ruling Lannister family. The regional market town contains a plethora of medieval and renaissance churches, and its plazas are a popular tourist attraction.

A number of scenes are to be set in  Granada’s Castillo de la Calahorra, in the Andalucía region, and reports state that the majority of shoots are taking place at night, likely depicting a battle. The castle itself still contains jail cells where imprisoned Moors were kept and is a now a national museum located less than an hour’s drive from the fortress of Alhambra, that has a a rich Moorish culture.

Spain has a long history of being a popular filming destination due to its varied terrain. From Clint Eastwood´s The Good, the Bad and the Ugly shot in 1966 to Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones. From Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond in Die Another Day, to Harrison’s Ford’s Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. This series will once again highlight the incredible architecture and culture that Spain has to offer.

The designation highlights Valencia for the quality of its Mediterranean design and marks the beginning of a series of cultural events aimed to consolidate this legacy of design focusing on six strategic hubs in which action can be taken via design: health and wellbeing; education; innovation and economy; heritage and identity; equality, inclusion and diversity; and sustainability.

The “unanimous” decision from the WDO was based upon “the precision, rigour and professionalism” of Valencia’s candidature. Xavi Calvo, strategic co-director of the candidacy for Valencia, believes that design will ‘accelerate the processes of social transformation’ and hopes to embrace the opportunity in the fullest. Valencia has provided a plan and itinerary for their proposed projects that includes everything from industrial designs to stunning architecture. It will be in line with the city’s cultural agenda so that the public can be as involved with the works as much as possible.

Every month there will be one of four types of events taking place based upon a new theme: exhibitions, congresses, workshops, and conferences. The content of these events will be centred around pressing topics such as climate change, Mediterranean design, gender equality in design, the history of design, industrial development, design and nature, among others. Projects include DNA Ceramics, the Design Map, two projects entitled Lo por venir and Trampolín for the occupational inclusion of people with disabilities as well as many others that enhance the value of Valencian design heritage.

Goya is considered the most important Spanish artist of the late 18^th and early 19^th centuries and is celebrated as both one of the last of the Old Masters and a forefather of modern art. His masterpieces include a portrait of Charles IV of Spain and his family (1800-1801), The Third of May (1808-1814), and the infamous Saturn Devouring His Son (1819-1823) which is part of the Black Paintings collection and displayed in the Prado Museum in Madrid.

Now in 2021, Aragón will celebrate his life with a programme of events that will take place in cities such as the capital, Zaragoza, and his hometown of Fuendetodos where visitors can pay a visit to his home which was declared a Historic National Monument in 1982.

The Zaragoza City Council will also be running a programme to celebrate the anniversary that will contain a series of cultural activities such as urban art exhibitions in the city centre with reinterpretations of Goya’s works created by young Aragonese artists and Goya figures put in place to be decorated by visitors as well as street theatre productions and other activities.

For foodies, the celebratory programme will also include the Goya Tapas Routes which has seen several establishments, selected based on criteria such as their proximity to prominent places linked to the artist and his legacy, offering set menus inspired by Goya and the era he thrived in.

Goya and his legacy as one of the greatest artists of all time have made the small village of Fuendetodos world famous. The village, which is around 50km from Zaragoza, contains the Engraving Museum, Zuluaga Hall and Goya’s birth home. This inconspicuous farm house where the great artist was born in 1746 now features three floors decorated with furniture and objects that transport visitors back to the 18th century and give them a glimpse into the early life of one of history’s most renowned artists.
