FIVE COASTAL DESTINATIONS LAUNCH 'BEACHES WITHOUT LIMITS'

Five of Spain’s great coastal destinations – Costa del Sol, Almería, Lanzarote, Rías Baixas, and Santander – have joined forces to launch the 'Playas sin Límite' (Beaches Without Limits) project. Under the slogan ‘Experience Them All Year’, the initiative seeks to break with convention and diversify tourism models to boost offerings in nautical activities, pet-friendly spaces, coastal hiking trails, and astrotourism beyond the peak summer season.

Supported by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Beaches Without Limits is part of the ‘Experiences Tourism Spain’ programme financed by European Next Generation EU funds. The initiative hopes to launch a children’s education and awareness campaign delivered through comics, encouraging responsible and continuous beach use. In addition, the project’s online platform will act as a digital hub, featuring a directory of companies delivering year-round experiences and a design manual to help local businesses adapt to low-season tourism.

Outlined below are examples of what each region has proposed to meet the project’s goals:

1. Costa del Sol aims to boost experiential tourism blending agricultural, cultural, and gastronomic elements. The creation of the Turismo Azul (Blue Tourism) programme seeks to enhance maritime tourism through sustainable and innovative sea-based experiences.

2. Focusing on creating high-quality, sustainable and digital tourism products Almería highlights Andalucia’s largest protected coastal area, Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, as a must-visit tourist destination in the municipality.

3. With opportunity to develop countless leisure activities, Lanzarote's close collaboration with companies in the maritime sector promises growth in nautical experiences outside of the peak summer period.

4. In Rías Baixas, the destination's approach aims to cover a wide range of themes, including territorial cohesion, sustainable mobility, circular economy, cultural wealth, and smart tourism. Altogether, these plans reflect the region's drive to sustainably modernise the destination.

5. Santander strives to preserve, and reintegrate areas of high ecological value into tidal systems. Offering sailing, surfing and cultural oceanic heritage, Santander seeks to promote recreational and social tourism from a sustainable perspective.

As summer draws to a close, Beaches Without Limits offers a balanced and innovative solution to economic decline during the low-season and anticipated overcrowding for future peak periods. Driving forth quality and competitiveness year-round, the project invites tourists to explore Spain’s coastline at a more leisurely pace, beyond the typical holiday rush.
