MADRID'S CUESTA DE MOYANO IS TURNING 100 IN 2025
Madrid's Cuesta de Moyano is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The Cuesta de Moyano is a beloved pedestrian avenue that has hosted the city's permanent book fair since 1925. For the past century, this charming literary hub has been a paradise for book lovers, offering everything from the latest releases to rare first editions, and print works, all at highly affordable prices.
Originally established with a series of small booths selling books for just 15 cents, the fair has evolved while maintaining its essence. Today, around 30 wooden stalls continue to be run by booksellers, many of whom are the children and grandchildren of the original founders. These dedicated vendors, now part of the Soy de la Cuesta Association, work to keep the tradition alive by organising cultural activities throughout the year.
Cuesta de Moyano, which connects Paseo del Prado near Atocha Station to Buen Retiro Park, is not just a marketplace but also a historic and cultural landmark. Statues of the Spanish writer Pío Baroja and politician Claudio Moyano stand at each end, honouring figures who played significant roles in Spain’s literary and intellectual history.
As the fair reaches its 100-year anniversary, it remains a treasured institution in Madrid, celebrating a century of literary passion and the enduring power of books.
