VITORIA-GASTEIZ OBTAINS THE RECORD OF THE WORLD'S LARGEST TORTILLA

The Basque capital of Vitoria-Gasteiz has achieved the world record for the world’s largest tortilla. 12 chefs representing the whole of Vitoria-Gasteiz’s hospitality sector worked together under the direction of Chef Senén González to cook the record breaking omelette on 2 August. This super-size tortilla weighed 1.5 tonnes, had a diameter of 5.2 metres and measured 7cm thick.

Over 30,000 people came out to watch the tortilla achieve the world record in the heart of Vitoria at the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca. An astounding 16,000 eggs, 1,600 kilos of potatoes from Álava, 150 litres of olive oil, 26 kilos of onions and 15 kilos of salt were used to prepare the tortilla. After being cut into the traditional triangular shape the tortilla served 10,000 portions and was handed out to attendees.

Mayor Javier Maroto was delighted by the event’s success and hopes that it contributes towards building the profile of Vitoria as the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy.
